Specialists in all aspects of Asbestos Removal throughout Scotland
Procedures for Dealing with Asbestos
It may be found that an asbestos containing material (ACM) is encountered, or that work is to be undertaken which has the potential to expose employees to asbestos. For most contracts, the building owners will know where asbestos can be found on their premises. In some cases Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) may already have been identified and labelled to warn others of its presence. However, often the presence of asbestos will not be obvious and it is therefore the policy of GC Roofing is to assume that any building constructed or refurbished before the 1980’s may contain asbestos-based materials. No work should be carried out which is likely to expose GC Clad Roofing.

Employees or subcontracting personnel to asbestos unless an adequate assessment of the exposure has been made. This means that the building or area of the building which has to be worked on should be inspected to identify the possible location, type and condition of any asbestos which may be disturbed during the work. All employees will be given instruction based on the findings of the assessment.

The greater the fibre release from an ACM, the greater the risk to health it will generate and, the higher the standard of precaution required when working with that material. Work in which an ACM is removed, repaired or disrupted will normally be carried out by a specialist contractor licensed under the Asbestos (Licensing) Regulations 1983.

What to do if you find asbestos?

If asbestos, or what is potentially asbestos and not previously identified in the initial assessment is discovered, the operative(s) must stop work immediately, they shall protect the asbestos (ACM’s) from further damage; as far as it is safe to do so, until an Asbestos Assessment has been completed on the manner in which work can proceed in safety. If there is doubt over the presence of asbestos, specialist advice will be sought for verification.

Accidental exposure to asbestos
If an accidental exposure to asbestos occurs despite control measures being in place and, is likely to exceed any statutory control limit,
then the emergency procedures must be initiated to limit personal exposure and subsequent risks to the exposed workers health.

• The cause of the uncontrolled material release should be identified and adequate control recovered as soon as possible.

• For Notifiable Asbestos; an Approved Asbestos removal company shall be employed for its safe removal.Non notifiable asbestos
   removal.

• Referring to HSE Guidelines on asbestos, the Project Director / Supervisor in charge should ensure the contaminated area is
thoroughly cleaned of visible debris or dust what may have been contaminated by asbestos fibres.

• Employees who may be involved in the carrying out this task shall wear appropriate PPE including RPE (disposable overalls,
disposable gloves and boot covers, respiratory protection).

• All work-wear which is likely to have come into contact with asbestos will be sealed as required in the HSE guidelines.

• Air sampling will be carried out to confirm that remedial measures have been effective.

• Debris should be bagged in special waste bags and be clearly marked as containing asbestos. The waste shall only be disposed
of at a licensed landfill site.

• Only those people who are essential in carrying out repairs and other necessary cleaning and maintenance work should be allowed
   into the affected area.

• Details of exposure will be added to each employee’s personal record. In order to keep employees informed and, to reduce the
potential risk of exposure to Asbestos (ACM’s) GC Roofing employees shall attend Asbestos Awareness Training.
